2. 아일랜드계 미국인의 역사

아일랜드계 미국인의 역사는 크게 세 시기로 나눌 수 있다. 18세기 이전의 초기 이민, 19세기 대기근 시기의 대규모 이민, 그리고 20세기 이후의 이민이다.

1800년대 이전 아일랜드 이민자들은 주로 시골 지역으로 이주하여 농업에 종사하거나 모피 무역에 참여했다. 일부는 해안 지역에서 어부나 선원으로 일하기도 했다.[121] 1820년부터 1860년까지 1,956,557명의 아일랜드인이 미국에 도착했으며, 이 중 75%는 1845년부터 1852년 사이에 발생한 아일랜드 대기근으로 인해 이주했다.[122] 이 시기 아일랜드 이민자들은 관짝선이라 불리는 열악한 환경의 배를 타고 대서양을 건너야 했으며, 많은 수가 질병으로 사망했다.[124]

2. 1. 17~18세기 초기 이민

2. 2. 19세기 대기근과 대규모 이민

1840년대 아일랜드 대기근으로 인해 수백만 명의 아일랜드인들이 미국으로 이주했다.[122] 1820년부터 1860년 사이에 아일랜드인들은 미국 이민자의 3분의 1을 차지했으며, 1840년대에는 절반에 달했다.[364] 이들은 주로 가톨릭 신자들이었으며,[40] 대서양을 건너는 열악한 환경, 이른바 '관짝선'으로 인해 많은 이들이 질병으로 사망하기도 했다.[124]

대기근 이후 아일랜드 이민자들은 주로 보스턴, 필라델피아, 뉴욕, 시카고를 비롯한 미국의 대도시에 정착했다.[125] 1910년에 뉴욕에는 더블린 전체 인구보다 더 많은 아일랜드인들이 살았을 정도였다.[388] 이들은 대개 하층 노동자로 일하며 빈곤과 차별에 시달렸다.

20세기 초, 아일랜드계 미국인들은 점차 사회 각 분야로 진출하며 미국의 주류 사회에 통합되기 시작했다. 초기 이민자들은 경찰관, 소방관, 군인 등 비교적 위험한 직업에 종사하는 경우가 많았는데,[365] 이는 목숨을 걸어야 하는 일에만 종사할 수밖에 없었던 당시의 역사적 상황과 아일랜드인 특유의 혈기왕성한 기질이 맞물린 결과였다. 이 때문에 아일랜드계 가정에서는 대대로 경찰이나 소방관을 지낸 사람들을 드물지 않게 볼 수 있다.

문화·전통적인 측면에서도 아일랜드계의 영향은 컸다. 경찰과 소방 분야에서는 경조사 등의 행사에서 백파이프 밴드(Bagpipe Band) 연주가 이루어지며, 뉴욕시 경찰국(NYPD)과 뉴욕 소방국(FDNY)에는 백파이프를 사용하는 취주악대인 '에메랄드 소사이어티'(Emerald Society)가 편성되어 훈련학교 졸업식, 순직자 장례식, 성 패트릭의 날 등에서 연주를 한다.[365]

미국-멕시코 전쟁에서는 병력의 40%가 아일랜드계였던 성 패트릭 대대가 미국군에서 탈영하여 멕시코군에 합류해 미국과 싸운 사례도 있다. 아일랜드계 미국인들은 미국 최초의 대륙 횡단 철도 건설 노동자로도 일했다.

아일랜드계 성(Family Name)의 특징으로는 'O’', 'Mc', 'Mac'으로 시작하는 철자를 들 수 있다. 이는 아일랜드어(아일랜드의 공용어)로 '누구누구의 자손', '누구누구의 동료'라는 의미를 가진다. 예를 들어, 존 매케인의 McCain은 '케인(Cain)의 가족 또는 동료'라는 의미가 된다. 케네디처럼 'O’', 'Mc', 'Mac'으로 시작하지 않는 성의 유래는 왕실이나 귀족 가계, 애칭, 직업, 지명 등 다양하다.

1840년대에 뉴욕의 존 휴즈 대주교(존 휴즈)는 아일랜드 공립학교 제도를 모델로 하여 아일랜드 출신 가톨릭 이민자를 위한 공립학교에 대한 캠페인을 벌였다. 휴즈는 뉴욕 주 의회가 1842년 맥클레이 법을 통과시켜 뉴욕시에 학교를 건설하고 감독하며 교육 기금을 분배할 권한을 가진 선출된 교육위원회를 구성했지만, 종교를 가르치는 학교에는 자금을 지원하지 않도록 하는 결과를 만들었다. 휴즈는 대학 수준까지 확장되는 정교한 교구 학교 시스템을 구축하여 다른 대도시에서도 따르는 정책을 수립했다.[195]

특히 1845년 아일랜드 대기근 이후 아일랜드 가톨릭 이민이 급증한 후, 많은 아일랜드 가톨릭 신자들은 도시 내에 자신들만의 공동체를 형성했다. 1870년 아일랜드계 미국인의 72%는 매사추세츠주, 코네티컷주, 뉴욕주, 뉴저지주, 펜실베이니아주, 오하이오주, 일리노이주의 도시 산업 단지에 집중되어 있었다. [196]

예수회는 보스턴 칼리지, 뉴욕의 포덤 대학교, 워싱턴 D.C.의 조지타운 대학교를 포함한 주요 도시에 대학 네트워크를 설립했다.[197][198]

1850년대까지 아일랜드인들은 미국의 가톨릭 교회 지도부에서 중요한 위치를 차지하게 되었고, 1890년에는 미국에 730만 명의 가톨릭 신자가 있었고 계속 증가했으며, 대부분의 주교는 아일랜드인이었다.[199] 1970년대 후반까지 아일랜드인은 미국 로마 가톨릭 신자의 17%였지만, 사제의 35%, 주교의 50%를 차지했다.[200]

미국 식민지 시대의 오지에 정착한 스코틀랜드계 아일랜드인들은 대부분 장로교 신자였다.[201] 1810년경에는 침례교와 감리교 교회가 다수를 차지했으며, 오늘날 스코틀랜드계 아일랜드인의 후손들은 주로 침례교 또는 감리교 신자이다.[203]

대부분의 아일랜드계 미국인들은 기독교 배경을 가지고 있지만, 일부는 아일랜드계 유대인이다. 1927년 아메리칸 히브루(The American Hebrew)가 발행한 뉴스 기사에 따르면 뉴욕시에는 1,000명의 아일랜드계 미국 유대인이 거주하고 있으며 미국 다른 지역에는 수천 명이 더 살고 있다고 보도했다.[221]

3. 2. 언어

19세기 말까지 많은 아일랜드 이민자들은 아일랜드어를 모국어로 사용했지만, 점차 영어 사용이 일반화되었다.[408] 이들은 아일랜드어만을 쓰는 사람들, 아일랜드어와 영어를 둘 다 쓰는 사람들, 영어만을 쓰는 사람들의 세 가지 언어 사용군으로 나뉘었다.[238] 1890년대 미국에는 40만 명의 아일랜드어 사용자들이 있었으며, 뉴욕, 필라델피아, 보스턴, 시카고와 용커스에서 쓰였다.[409] 뉴욕에서는 아일랜드어 사용자가 7만 명에서 8만 명 사이에 달해 아일랜드어 사용 인구가 그 절정에 도달하였다.[410] 그러나 이 수는 20세기 초반 동안에 쇠퇴하였고, 1939년 4만 명, 1979년에 1만 명, 1995년에 5천 명으로 떨어졌다.[411]

가장 최근의 인구 조사에 의하면 아일랜드어는 2만 5천 명의 사용자들과 함께 미국에서 오늘날 쓰이고 있는 322개 언어 중에 66위에 올랐다. 뉴욕주는 아일랜드 게일어 사용자가 가장 많이 있으며, 매사추세츠주는 50개 주들 중의 가장 비율이 높았다.[412] 뉴저지주 엘버론에 본거지를 둔 비영리적 게일어 지지 단체인 Daltaí na Gaeilge는 2006년 기준 대략 3만 명이 게일어를 사용하고 있다고 측정하였다. 해당 단체는 1981년 설립 당시보다 몇 천 명 정도만 증가했다고 주장한다.[413]

아일랜드계 미국인들은 영어 사용에 있어서도 독특한 억양과 표현을 사용하는 경우가 많다.

3. 3. 축제와 전통

많은 아일랜드계 후손들은 자신들의 유산에 대한 의식을 가지고 있다. 아일랜드 헌법 제2조는 이를 공식적으로 인정한다.

"...아일랜드인의 국가는 아일랜드의 문화 정체성과 유산을 공유하는 해외 거주 아일랜드 계통의 주민들과 함께 그 특별한 인척 관계를 소중히 한다."


추방, 망명, 향수의 감정은 노래들의 공통된 주제이다. "플래스틱 패디"는 아일랜드에서 태어나지 않고 세대가 지나면서 아일랜드 태생의 조상과 멀어졌지만 자신들을 아일랜드인이라고 여기는 사람들을 가리킨다.[434][435][436]

어떤 아일랜드계 미국인들은 아일랜드의 독립을 열광적으로 지지한다. 페니언 브라더후드 운동은 미국을 본거지로 하였으며, 영국령 캐나다에 대한 공격(일명 "페니언 레이드")을 몇 차례 감행하였으나 실패하였다. IRA 임시파는 아일랜드 망명자들과 아일랜드계 미국인 지지자들에게 자신들의 준군사적 활동을 위한 중요한 자금을 받았다. 1984년 미국 법무부는 아일랜드계 미국인 모금 단체 '아일랜드원조위원회'(NORAID)가 IRA 임시파를 그 "외국 군대"(Foreign Principal)으로 인정하라는 소송에서 이겼다.[437]

4. 아일랜드계 미국인의 사회적 기여



아일랜드계 미국인들은 미국 독립 혁명 시기부터 미국 독립선언문과 미국 헌법과 같은 기초 문서에 서명하고, 앤드루 잭슨을 필두로 대통령직을 맡는 등 여러 분야에 걸쳐 미국 사회에 기여하였다.

17세기부터 아일랜드인들은 미국으로 이주하기 시작했다. 18세기에는 10만 명 이상의 아일랜드인들이 미국으로 이주했으며, 당시 연기 계약 이민의 열 명 중 아홉 명이 아일랜드계였을 정도였다.[371] 이 시기 아일랜드 이민자들은 미국 독립 혁명에 참여하여 영국군에 맞서 싸웠으며, 영국군 소장은 식민지 군대의 절반이 아일랜드에서 왔다고 증언하기도 했다.[376]

얼스터 지방에서 미국으로 건너온 아일랜드계 정착자들은 미국에서 "스코틀랜드계 아일랜드인"으로 불리게 되었다. 이들은 애팔래치아산맥 미개척지에 정착하여 포크 음악, 컨트리 음악, 웨스턴 음악, 스톡 카 레이싱 같은 분야에 공헌하며 미국 문화에 영향을 주었다.[375]

종교는 미국 아일랜드계 미국인 정체성에 중요한 역할을 해왔다. 1970년대 이후 설문 조사에 따르면, 자신을 아일랜드계라고 밝힌 사람들 중 상당수가 개신교 신자였다.[145][146] 1990년대 설문 조사에서는 "아일랜드인"으로 식별하는 미국인 중 51%가 프로테스탄트, 36%가 가톨릭 신자라고 답했다.[177]

19세기와 20세기 초, 미국에서는 아일랜드인에 대한 반감이 극심했다.[270] 반가톨릭주의와 토착주의 정서가 고조되면서 1850년대 아일랜드계 미국인에 대한 차별이 심해졌고, 노싱 노우스 운동이 일어나기도 했다.[271]

많은 아일랜드 노동자들이 계약업자들에 의해 고용되어 전국적으로 운하, 철도, 도시 거리, 하수도를 건설했다.[249] 1895년에는 적정 기사단이 설립되어 아일랜드계 가톨릭 신자에 대한 차별에 맞서 싸웠다.[278]

일부 프로테스탄트 아일랜드 이민자들은 오렌지 기관과 미국 보호 협회와 같은 반가톨릭 단체에서 활동했지만, 미국에서 오렌지 기관의 참여는 캐나다만큼 크지 않았다.[183] 1870년과 1871년에는 오렌지 폭동이 발생하여 아일랜드 프로테스탄트와 가톨릭 이민자들 사이에 싸움이 벌어지기도 했다.[188]

아일랜드계 미국인들은 민주당 조직에서 구역 지도자가 되었고,[116] 미합중국 남부 연합(Confederate States of America)을 지지하여 2만 명의 아일랜드 가톨릭 신자들이 남부 연합군(Confederate States Army)에서 복무하기도 했다.[117][118]

찰스 캐롤, 미국 독립 선언서(U.S. Declaration of Independence)에 서명한 유일한 가톨릭(Irish Catholics) 서명자는 티퍼러리주(County Tipperary)의 아일랜드 귀족의 후손이었다. 서명자 매슈 손튼(Matthew Thornton), 조지 테일러(George Taylor (Pennsylvania politician))는 아일랜드에서 태어난 "울스터" 스코틀랜드인이었고, 토마스 린치 주니어(Thomas Lynch Jr.)는 프로테스탄트였으며 아일랜드계였고 강한 아일랜드 정체성을 유지했다.


아일랜드계 미국인들은 핸드볼, 헐링 및 게일릭 풋볼과 같은 전통적인 경기를 미국에 가져왔으며, 북미 GAA 조직은 10개 지부에 걸쳐 128개의 클럽을 가지고 있다.[307]

4. 1. 정치

아일랜드계 미국인들은 미국의 정치 역사에서 중요한 역할을 수행해 왔다. 미국 독립선언문에 서명한 8명의 대표자들과 미국 헌법을 제정한 6명의 대표자들 모두 아일랜드계였다.[441]

앤드루 잭슨 대통령은 최초의 아일랜드계 대통령이며, 허버트 후버 대통령은 어머니를 통해 아일랜드계 혈통을 이어받았다.[444] 존 F. 케네디 대통령은 아일랜드 대기근 시기 미국으로 이주한 이민자의 후손이자 최초의 로마 가톨릭 신자 대통령이었다. 로널드 레이건 대통령 역시 아일랜드 혈통을 자랑스럽게 여겼다. 버락 오바마 대통령은 어머니를 통해 일부 아일랜드계 혈통을 이어받았다.[444] 조 바이든 대통령은 두번째 아일랜드계 가톨릭 대통령이다.

1830년대부터 1960년대까지 아일랜드 가톨릭교도들은 1920년 선거를 제외하고는 80~95%가 민주당에 투표하였다.[441] 조지프 매카시 상원의원은 민주당과 관련된 아일랜드계 미국인 중 예외적으로 공화당원이었다.

오늘날 아일랜드계 정치인들은 민주당과 공화당 양쪽 모두에 속해 있다.[442] 역사적으로 아일랜드 가톨릭교도들은 많은 도시 기구들을 통제하고 민주당 전국 위원회의 의장을 맡기도 하였다.[442] 의회의 아일랜드인들은 양당 모두에서 나타난다.[442] 최근의 대통령 선거 출구 조사에서 아일랜드 가톨릭교도들의 민주당과 공화당 후보들에 대한 지지 비율이 50 대 50으로 갈라졌으며, 다수는 레이건을 뽑았다.[442]

많은 주요 도시들은 가톨릭 아일랜드계 미국인 시장들을 선출하였다.[335] 시카고, 보스턴과 저지시티에서는 다른 민족 집단들보다 더 많은 아일랜드계 미국인 시장들이 있었다.[335] 밀워키와 디트로이트는 2018년 현재 아일랜드계 미국인 시장들이 재임 중이다.[335]

4. 2. 경제

1840년대 아일랜드 대기근 이후, 많은 아일랜드 이민자들이 미국으로 건너왔다. 이들은 주로 보스턴, 뉴욕, 시카고 등 항구 도시에 정착했지만, 19세기 초반부터는 운하와 철도 건설 같은 대규모 기반 시설 프로젝트를 위해 내륙으로 이동하기도 했다.[378]

초기 아일랜드 이민자들은 대부분 가난했으며, 낮은 사회적 계층에서 시작했다.[424] 이들은 주로 단순 노동직에 종사했는데, 남성들은 운하, 철도, 거리 건설 현장에서 일했고,[415] 여성들은 호텔이나 개인 가정의 하녀로 일하는 경우가 많았다.[418]

19세기 중반, 미국으로의 여성 이민은 두드러졌는데, 특히 아일랜드 여성들은 가정부 일자리를 선호했다.[422] 다른 직종보다 임금이 높고 안정적이었으며, 숙식이 제공되어 생활비를 절약할 수 있었기 때문이다.[423] 그러나, 가정부 일은 24시간 고용주의 시중을 들어야 하는 등 힘든 노동이었고, 아일랜드 여성들은 '늙은 흑인과 같은 정도의 지능을 갖고 있는' 실패자들이라는 차별적인 시선을 받기도 했다.[423]

19세기 후반, 아일랜드계 미국인들은 점차 사회 경제적으로 성장했다. 특히 가톨릭 아일랜드계 미국인들은 1900년경에 이웃들과 비슷한 수준의 직업과 봉급을 얻게 되었으며,[424] 1945년 이후에는 높은 대학 진학률을 바탕으로 사회 계층의 상위권으로 올라갔다.[425]

오늘날 아일랜드계 미국인들은 다양한 분야에서 활동하고 있다. 프록터 앤드 갬블(P&G) 창업자 제임스 갬블, 전 제너럴 일렉트릭(GE) 회장 잭 웰치, 스티븐 배넌 같은 기업인과 앤서니 케네디, 브렛 캐버노 같은 연방 대법원 판사 등 여러 분야에서 주요 인물들을 배출했다.

4. 3. 사회

아일랜드계 미국인들은 미국의 노동 운동, 사회 정의 운동 등 다양한 사회 운동에 참여하여 미국의 사회 발전에 기여했다.

1820년 아일랜드 출신 존 잉글랜드(John England) 주교는 사우스캐롤라이나주 찰스턴의 첫 번째 가톨릭 주교가 되어 프로테스탄트의 편견에 맞서 가톨릭 소수 민족을 옹호했다. 1831년과 1835년에는 흑인 어린이들을 위한 무료 학교를 설립했다.[113] 1835년 미국 노예제 폐지 협회의 선전에 격분한 군중이 찰스턴 우체국을 습격했고, 다음 날 잉글랜드의 학교를 공격하자 잉글랜드는 찰스턴의 "아일랜드 자원 봉사자들"(Irish Volunteers)을 이끌고 학교를 방어했다. 그러나 그 직후 찰스턴에서는 "자유 흑인"을 위한 모든 학교가 폐쇄되었고, 잉글랜드는 이에 동의했다.[113]

1828년에는 존 맥멀런(John McMullen)과 제임스 맥글로인(James McGloin), 제임스 파워(James Power)와 제임스 휴에트슨(James Hewetson) 등 아일랜드 사업가들이 텍사스 공화국에 식민지를 건설했다. 맥멀런과 맥글로인은 산 안토니오 남쪽에 산 파트리시오 식민지(San Patricio Colony)를, 파워와 휴에트슨은 멕시코 만 연안에 레퓨지오 식민지(Refugio Colony)를 세웠다. 이들 식민지에는 주로 아일랜드인들이 정착했지만, 멕시코인과 다른 국적의 사람들도 정착했다. 1840년대에는 최소 87명의 아일랜드 성을 가진 사람들이 현재 텍사스 중북부 대부분을 포함하는 피터스 식민지(Peters Colony)에 정착했다. 아일랜드인들은 멕시코에 대한 텍사스 독립 전쟁에 참여했는데, 1836년 3월 알라모 전투(Battle of the Alamo)에서 사망한 사람들 중에는 아일랜드 출신 12명과 아일랜드 성을 가진 14명이 있었다. 약 100명의 아일랜드 출신 병사들이 산하신토 전투(Battle of San Jacinto)에 참여했는데, 이는 당시 텍사스인(Texians) 총 병력의 약 7분의 1에 해당한다.[114]

1861년 남부 연합 탈퇴 이후 남부 아일랜드 가톨릭 공동체는 미합중국 남부 연합(Confederate States of America)을 지지했고 2만 명의 아일랜드 가톨릭 신자들이 남부 연합군(Confederate States Army)에서 복무했다.[117][118] 아일랜드 민족주의자 존 미첼(John Mitchel)은 테네시와 버지니아에서 신문 "Southern Citizen"과 "Richmond Enquirer"를 통해 남부 연합을 지지했다.[119]

대부분 비숙련 노동자로 시작했지만, 남부의 아일랜드 가톨릭 신자들은 1900년까지 평균 이상의 경제적 지위를 달성했으며, 사회적으로도 잘 받아들여졌다.[120]

4. 4. 문화와 스포츠

아일랜드계 미국인들은 문학, 음악, 영화, 연극, 스포츠 등 다양한 분야에서 뛰어난 업적을 남겼다.

매년 성 파트리치오의 날에 열리는 축제는 미국에서 아일랜드계의 상징으로 널리 인정받는다. 뉴욕에서 열리는 성 파트리치오의 날 행렬은 약 200만 명의 시민들을 끌어 모으는 가장 큰 축제이다. 두 번째로 큰 축제는 보스턴에서 열리며, 사우스 보스턴 행렬의 역사는 1737년으로 거슬러 올라가 미국에서 가장 오래된 축제들 중 하나이다. 서배너에서도 미국에서 가장 큰 행렬 중 하나를 개최하고 있다.[376]

1840년대에 2백만 명에 가까운 아일랜드 이민자들이 도착한 이후, 도시의 아일랜드계 경찰들과 소방관들은 사실상 미국 대중 문화의 아이콘이 되었다. 많은 대도시의 경찰국과 소방국들은 '크고 활동적인 단체'인 "에머럴드 소사이어티", 백파이프 행진단 또는 유사한 단체들을 유지하며, 자신들의 아일랜드 유산에 대한 자부심을 보여주고 있다.

아일랜드계 미국인들은 공연 예술, 영화, 문학, 정치, 스포츠와 종교 등 여러 분야에서 미국 문화에 공헌하였다. 제임스 캐그니, 빙 크로스비, 월트 디즈니, 존 포드, 주디 갈런드,[445] 그레이스 켈리와 같은 인물들이 대표적이다. 미국 시민권을 얻은 아일랜드 출신 여배우 모린 오하라는 《조용한 남자》와 《롱 그레이 라인》 같은 영화들에서 활달한 아일랜드 소녀 역을 맡았다. 텔레비전 초기에는 아트 카니, 그레이시 앨런, 조 플린, 재키 글리슨과 에드 설리번 같은 아일랜드계 배우들이 인기를 얻었다.

영화 산업 초기부터 수많은 아일랜드계 미국인 영화사 대표들이 있었다. 《리틀 넬리 켈리》, 《카디널》, 《워터프론트》, 《갱스 오브 뉴욕》, 《디파티드》 등이 아일랜드계 미국인과 관련된 유명한 영화이다.
